Basingstoke and Deane is a great place to work. Thank you for your interest in this exciting opportunity at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council which will play a major role in making the best use of our considerable assets to build an even brighter future for our residents and businesses.

Having invested well over the long-term, we are one of the most financially resilient councils in the country, despite the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This means that we have the resources to make things happen and to drive a £4 billion development programme whose yields will underpin the economy and fund public services.

Initiatives such as the development of a new garden community at Manydown and the £500 million town centre business park regeneration at Basing View – both leveraging the council’s own extensive landholdings – demonstrate that we operate on a different scale to many, and this comes with high expectations.

We have an economy that’s valued at £7.4 billion, with capacity and ambition to build on this to ensure the borough remains prosperous.

Like every local authority in the country, we have a vital and fundamental role to play in delivering a sustainable post-COVID recovery for our communities. And while we are in an excellent position to do so – having built financial capacity and resilience into our long-term planning for decades – we are in no way complacent about the challenges that lie ahead.

One of the most important figures for us is our extremely high 95% resident satisfaction rate with the borough as a place to live. To achieve this we focus on addressing the things that matter most to our residents.

At a time when people in our community are likely to face economic hardship owing to the impacts of the pandemic, we need a person in this key role who isn’t just good at financial management but also has real entrepreneurial flair and innovative ideas to get the very best value from all we do.

We have high performing services and lots of opportunities and assets that we could mobilise to bring returns to support our services and ambitious plans without adding to the burden for our council taxpayers.

It’s a complex and often challenging place, but incredibly professionally rewarding.

As our Head of Financial Services and Commercialisation, you would lead a knowledgeable and experienced team covering accountancy, commercialisation and exchequer and benefits services, and will play a key role in developing the council’s strategic approach to financial planning and developing commercial activities.

I’m looking forward to meeting highly able candidates with a strong interest in innovation, efficiency and customer focus.

I wish you the very best of luck in your application.
